Welcome to the world of quilting. We hope with Simple Beginnings to teach you the basics of cutting, sewing accurate 1/4" seam allowances, putting a block together and then putting the blocks into a quilt top. You will complete the top in class and can then go on to learn how to machine or hand quilt your top.
Finished size is 38" X 53"
Suplies
- Mat 18" x 24" - good size for class.
- Rotary cutter
- 6" x 24" (or 6 1/2" x 24") ruler
- 9 1/2" square ruler
- 1" x 6" ruler
- Collins silk pins
- Pin cushion
- Pencils to mark fabrics
- Thread to blend with your fabrics. I usually use medium gray.
- Scissors to cut treads.
- Seam ripper.
- Zip lock bags to hold your finished blocks
- Book: Quilter's Academy Freshman Year, Vol 1. Optional BUT highly recommended by Harriet Hargrave.
Fabrics:
- 1/2 yard Background (lightest color for large squares and some small triangles)
- 5/8 yards each of 3 different fabrics (medium values for circle looking shapes)
- 1/4 yard each of 2 different fabrics (dark value for corners of blocks).
- 1 yard multicolored fabric for border.
- 1 3/4 yards for backing
- 1/2 yard for binding.

- Corner Star Blocks: 8" finished
Fabric Requirements
- Large scale floral for block centres and border two (Fabric #1) - 2 1/3 yards.
- Tone-on-tones (Fabrics #2 and #4) - 1/2 yard of each, to blend with #1 and #3.
- Stripe (Fabric #3) - 2/3 yard for blocks, extra for binding if desired.
- 1/3 yard.
- Background (Fabric #5) - 1 1/2 yards.
- Fabric #6 - borders one and three - 5/8 yard. Tone-on-tone similar to #2 & #4.
- Printed fabric for background of four corner stars - 1/3 yard.
- Binding - 3/4 yard
- Backing - 3 - 3 1/2 yards
- For a scrappy look, make each block from a different combination of four fabrics. This would take approx 24 fat eighths, 6 of which need to be stripes.

- Sandpaper board and pencil
- 6" square ruler for trimming, in addition to large ruler for cutting strips.
- Rotary cutter, ruler & mat.
- Basic sewing supplies, including neutral piecing thread.
- Sewing machine with walking foot if available.
- 1/4" machine foot or ability to adjust needle position.
Table Runner
- Fabric #1 - Large scale floral for block centres and outer border - 2/3 yard
- Fabrics #2 and #4 - Fat 1/4 of each. Tone-on-tones to blend with #1 and #3.
- Fabric #3 - Stripe - 1/3 yard for blocks, plus extra for binding if desired.
- Fabric #5 - Background - 2/3 yard
- Binding - 1/4 yard
- Backing 1 1/2 yards
Lap Quilt

Ripless Paper Piecing
Feb 11 - 10:30am - 1:30pm.

This star quilt is put together with four easy blocks plus borders. If you have never quilted, you can do this! This easy method of paper piecing will help you have an accurately pieced quilt with no paper to tear off. Come, have fun and go home with a complete or nearly complete top. Kits will be provided so we can spend all our time sewing.
A kit will be provided for this class.

Supplies needed:
- Kit: Provided at time of class
- Old magazine or catalog covered with tin foil and placed in muslin bag just big enough to fit.
- Rotary cutter and mat (a small one will be fine) and ruler. An 8" X 12" mat is great.
- Sewing machine
- Add a quarter ruler.
- Scissors to cut threads.
- Seam ripper.
- Paper scissors.
- Thread to blend (grey will be good).
- A few pins might be helpful.
- Mini irons come in handy but are not required.
- Sewing machine in good working order.
- Edge foot or open toe foot helpful if you have one for your machine.
